The Harijan Panchayat Committee in Shillong has once again opposed the proposed relocation move of the state government.

Secretary of the Harijan Panchayat Committee, Gurmeet Singh said that no papers have been made public to verify the assertions made by the state administration.

Singh stated that as per the High Level Committee (HLC), the document was handed over by the Syiem of Hima Mylliem to the Harijan community back in 2008, which was also agreed by the state government. Singh alleged that the government of the day is turning a blind eye to an admitted fact.

Further, Singh in a statement said that before 2008, they did not receive any official letter individually from Former CM Williamson Sangma.  The former Chief Minister Williamson Sangma, had agreed on giving the land to the Harijan Community as they have been living there from the past several years.

In response to a question about forcible eviction, Singh stated that the government has the authority to expel residents, but the community members will remain steadfast in their refusal to leave. He went on to say that evicting individuals from a community whose forefathers made significant contributions to the state’s growth would be a grave injustice.

Furthermore, when asked about the possibility of shifting residents of the Harijan Colony to government quarters, Singh noted that this would only be a temporary solution, as those quarters can be taken away as well if the authorities later on.
