Former Assam Minister Abdul Muhib Mazumder breathed his last on the morning of November 3rd  at the age of 89 owing to old-age ailments. He was reportedly admitted at the GMCH for over a month now.

A well-known lawyer and the architect of the IMDT Act, Mazumder represented the Hailakandi constituency four times as an MLA from 1983 to 2016. He was also a cabinet minister in the Hiteshwar Saikia-led Congress government.

Later in the 1990s, Mazumder founded the United People’s Party of Assam or UPPA, following which he became the cabinet minister in the AGP-led coalition government in the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta-led government in 1996.

After disbanding the UPPA later, he became the President of the Assam wing of the Samajwadi Party. He later returned to the Congress party.

He is survived by three daughters.
