In a big boost to the Sports infrastructure in the state, Sikkim Governor Ganga Prasad today inaugurated the Bhaichung Bhutia Stadium in Namchi. The Governor was also accompanied by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and other cabinet ministers at the inauguration event.
The stadium is named after the face of Indian football and legend, Bhaichung Bhutia. The Stadium is located in South District, Namchi, which is about 25-km away from Bhutia’s birthplace Tinkitam.
Recently the stadium underwent turf testing for FIFA Certification. Now the stadium can host international level soccer matches, the stadium also aims to host ISL matches, and can accommodate 15,000 spectators.
The stadium has a playing field of 105 feet in length and 68 feet in breadth. It was earlier known as Ahalay ground and the construction began in the year 2011 with 32 crore fund and was supposed to be completed by 2015, but due to financial constrains the construction work was halted.
The construction resumed in 2019, and with additional 30 crore, the stadium was finally completed.
Baichung Bhutia himself attended the inauguration program today.
