The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday named Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as its candidate for upcoming by-polls to Rajya Sabha from Assam scheduled for October 4.

Sonowal is the incumbent Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Minister of AYUSH in the Government of India. He is also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs and former Chief Minister of Assam.

Sonowal was inducted as minister by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making it necessary for him to contest elections for Parliament within six months.

The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant after Biswajit Daimary resigned from the upper house to become the Assembly speaker.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has a majority in the state assembly.

It is to be mentioned that the BJP with 94 members is currently the single largest party in the upper house.
