Former Congress Legislator from Mariani of Jorhat district, Rupjyoti Kurmi joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday at a programme held at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji district in presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Kurmi had resigned from the Indian National Congress and resigned from the legislative assembly on Friday.
Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, Tea Tribes Welfare Minster Sanjay Kishan, MP Pradan Baruah, MLA and Political Secretary to the CM Jayanta Malla Baruah, MLAs Naba Kumar Doley and Manab Deka were also present in the ceremony.
While welcoming Rupjyoti Kurmi to the BJP on behalf of all the functionaries of the party, Chief Minister Sarma said that Kurmi joining BJP will further strengthen the party. He also conveyed his best wishes to him.
The Chief Minister said that Kurmi has always worked sincerely for the development of Mariani and hoped that he would continue to do so with greater commitment.
Kurmi had blamed the Congress leadership for not acknowledging his contribution towards the party and refusing to give him any position of responsibility like president of the APCC or leader of the CLP, which he had sought. “The party is headed for ruin in the state,” he said.
