NEDA Convener and Assam Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday informed that all his rallies and public meetings stand cancelled following the Election Commission’s decision to bar him from campaigning for the next 48 hours.
Taking to Twitter, Sarma said, “I am asked by ECI to stop campaigning for next 48 hours. Therefore all my meetings scheduled for tomorrow stand cancelled.”
It may be mentioned that the ECI yesterday issued a notice barring Sarma from campaigning for the next two days after it found the latter’s reply to an earlier notice unsatisfactory.
The Election Commissiom had issued a notice to Sarma following a complain by the Congress accusing him of threatening to send BPF Chief Hagrama Mohilary to jail by using the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The EC, which had subsequently obtained a transcript of Sarma’s statement found the content violative of the Model Code of Conduct. As such a notice was sent to Sarma seeking his reply on the matter.
Though Sarma denied the allegations against him in his reply, the EC found it to be unsatisfactory.
A total of 40 seats including Jalukbari, from where Sarma is contesting, will go to the polls in the third phase on April 6.
