In view of the rising COVID-19 cases, Assam Chief Electoral Officer Nitin Khade on Thursday appealed to the people of the state to wear face masks while casting their votes.

Addressing a special press conference in Guwahati, Khade added that the election commission will provide free face masks to people not wearing masks. He claimed that Covid measures will be taken at all poll stations, but urged that the general public should also follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Khade said that as a new experiment by the election commission, fixed cameras will be installed at poll booths and webcasting will be done for additional security.  The feed will be directly monitored by senior election commission officers.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live after the press meet, Khade appealed to all voters to vote without any fear of Covid. He added that the poll panel will also provide free plastic gloves to all.

On the webcasting experiment, the Chief electoral official said this step will boost security at “critical polling stations.”
