Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday informed the State Assembly that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe into the recent grenade attack at the local newspaper office in Imphal on February 13.

The four-member panel headed by Superintendent of Police, Imphal West district has started probe into the grenade attack at the office of Poknapham and its sister publication- People’s Chronicle on 13th of February, said the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Biren Singh strongly condemning the incident gave his assurance that the culprits involved will be nabbed at the earliest. He said that steps have been taken up to deploy security personnel at the office of media houses.

The development comes at a time when massive protests by journalists erupted across the state seeking security and proper probe into the matter.

Following the attack, media houses in Imphal stopped dissemination of news through newspapers and channels from next day onwards.

Earlier today, the media houses in Manipur decided to refrain itself from publishing and broadcasting for another 48 hours in condemnation of the grenade attack. Scribe body across the state expressed solidarity to the 48 hour cease work.

The decision to cease all media activities was taken during the general body meeting of All Manipur Working Journalist Union or AMWJU and Editors Guild Manipur.
