Ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam, the state government on Friday said it has cut petrol and diesel prices by Rs 5.

Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while presenting the vote on account Budget for the year 2021-2022 on the second day of the State Assembly session announced that from Friday midnight the prices of petrol and diesel will be reduced by Rs 5 making it one of the lowest fuel prices in the country.

The revised rate will come into effect from midnight today. The price of petrol in Guwahati currently stands at Rs 90.94 while that of diesel is at Rs 84.82.

Meanwhile, the state government has also decided to drop the price of liquor from February 13.

Speaking at the session, Sarma also announced that the government has decided to remove additional cess of around 25% imposed on alcohol beverages, which was imposed to meet healthcare expenses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sarma made the announcements in the state Assembly while presenting the last budget of the BJP-led government. The three-day Assembly session will continue till February 13.
