The Mizoram government has imposed a complete ban on the sale or use of all kinds of fireworks ahead of new year celebrations to prevent deterioration in air quality amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

The decision in this regard was taken during a meeting chaired by State Home Minister Lalchamliana in presence of Chief Secretary, Home Department officials, and other representatives.

Apart from firecrackers, the use of sky lanterns and other pyrotechnics have also been prohibited with officials saying it could lead to fires as well as cause disruptions in the power supply.

Bursting of firecrackers is a widespread practice during the festive season. But stricter laws have been enforced in view of the pandemic, as it could aggravate respiratory problems of COVID-19 patients and pose a serious risk to them.

The district magistrates have enforced CrPc Section 144 and those found breaking rules would be imprisoned or fined under IPC 188.
