The Meghalaya police have stepped up vigil to monitor the movement of illegal coal transportation throughout the East Khasi Hills district. This was informed by the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Sylvester Nongrum.

Nongrum said that they have recently detected two illegal coal trucks from Sohiong. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.

He also informed about the seizure of two more trucks carrying illegal coal in Mawlai in the month of August and both the drivers were apprehended.

Meanwhile, SP(City) Vivek Syiem said that they don’t have check gates but as and when they get any information they conduct checking. He added that unlike other districts they don’t have a station area where they can do checking.

It may be noted that the Meghalaya government has asserted that all state machineries have been activated and directed all concerned to strictly check and ensure there is no illegal transportation of coal in the State.
