After the BJP in Meghalaya demanded for an arrest of the State’s Power Minister James Sangma over his alleged involvement in the illegal coal trade, leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma on Saturday alleged that a cartel is operating illegal coal mining in the State.

He further alleged that the existing land laws are being manipulated to facilitate illegal coal mining. Mukul Sangma has also demanded an independent probe into it.

He said that unless there is an independent investigation, the truth can never be unearthed.

Speaking about the modus operandi to use the existing law to camouflage the illegalities involved, Dr Sangma alleged that the Deputy Commissioners of the respective districts auctions unclaimed coal.

He also alleged that there is complete bargaining going on for the cartel and random transfer of officers are taking place to smoothen the process.
