Former chief minister of Assam, Syeda Anwara Taimur has passed away in Australia on Monday, at the age of 84.

The lone woman chief minister from Assam was residing in Australia with her son for the past few years. She had been ailing for a long period of time.

Taimur was the chief minister of the state from December 6, 1980 to June 30, 1981.

From 1983 to 1985 Taimur was the Public Works Department (PWD) minister of Assam. She was elected to the Assam Assembly (MLA) in 1972, 1978, 1983, and 1991.

Her death has been widely mourned cutting across party lines.
