Noted folk singer from Assam Archana Mahanta passed away on Thursday due to prolonged illness. She was admitted to a private nursing home in Guwahati following a brain stroke on July 14.
According to reports, the acclaimed singer was undergoing treatment at the Health City Hospital in Guwahati.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has mourned the death of the music icon.
In a tweet, Sonowal said, “Anguished at the demise of renowned Assamese folk singer Archana Mahanta baidew. Today, we have lost a shining star among the cultural stalwarts of the state. I offer my deepest condolences and join all her well-wishers and fans in prayers for the departed soul.”
Archana Mahanta and her late husband Khagen Mahanta had enormous contribution in popularising and preserving Assamese folk music. There are many evergreen songs to the credit of the popular singer couple.
Her son, Angarag Papon Mahanta, who has carved a niche for himself, is also a famous playback singer in Bollywood with an enormous body of work in Assamese music.
She leaves behind a host of relatives and friends including two grandchildrens.
