Manipur recorded the biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases after five more positive cases were detected on Wednesday evening, taking the total cases count to 25.

With 11 other cases detected earlier yesterday, a total of 16 persons tested positive for the deadly virus in a span of less than 8 hours.

Of the 16 new cases, as many as 14 had recently returned from Chennai while 1 is a Delhi returnee and the other had travel history to Guwahati.

15 of them are from the state’s Churachandpur district, while one is from Imphal East. Unfortunately, among the 16 positive cases is a 23-old-day infant and her mother.

While 11 persons have been admitted to the COVID-19 care facility at JNIMS, the remaining 5 are at the Covid Care Centre at District Hospital, Churachandpur.

Following the sudden spike in positive cases in the state in the wake of the return of stranded residents from outside region, the State Cabinet decided to segregate incoming people from existing inmates in quarantine centres so as to cut the risk of possible spread.

After due deliberation, the Cabinet also decided to bring stranded people in phased manner and it was decided that in the first phase, trains arranged till May 25th will be allowed to come in.

It may be mentioned that as many as 6 trains have arrived in Jiribam so far. Meanwhile, the testing capacity has been increased to 1,500 per day.

With 15 people testing positive in Churachandpur yesterday, health authorities in the area are gearing up to face any situation.

Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in the area strictly prohibiting movement of people from 6 pm to 6 am till May 31st.

While 10,000 more are expected to arrive in Manipur in the next one week, the government’s decision to regulate entry would mean that the stranded would have to wait for some more time to return.
