Assam has registered the third COVID-19 death in the state. A cancer patient who tested for coronavirus breathed his last at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

It may be mentioned that the 71-year-old patient had returned from Mumbai and was suffering from neck cancer. According to the health department the cause of the death has been attributed to respiratory distress.

The patient had returned to Assam from Mumbai in a bus and was detected as Covid positive while he was in quarantine at the Hotel Radisson Blu. The wife and son of the deceased patient have also been shifted to the MMCH from quarantine.

Taking to Twitter Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Extremely sad to share that Gopindra Ch Malakar 71, who returned from Mumbai & had neck cancer + Covid + passed away at 11.05 am at GMCH owing to respiratory distress. Doctors did their best. DME has reached & DC  informed for other formalities. Heartfelt condolences.”

Meanwhile, two more persons – one from Jorhat and the other from Nagaon have tested positive for COVID-19.

With 56 active cases, the number of total coronavirus cases has risen to 102 in the state. 41 persons have recovered while 3 died. 2 patients have migrated.
