In a major development, the Union Cabinet has decided to cut salaries of all Members of Parliament, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi by 30 per cent for a year. This was informed by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday.

Briefing media after the Cabinet meeting, Javadekar said the Cabinet has approved the ordinance amending the salary, allowances and pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954, reducing their salary, allowances and pension by 30 per cent. This will be effective from April 1 for a year.

Javadekar further informed that all MP Local Area Development funds have been suspended for 2 years. The consolidated amount of MPLAD funds for 2 years -Rs 7900 crores – will go to Consolidated Fund of India. The funds will be used for fight against COVID-19.

Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Governors of all the States have voluntarily decided to take a pay cut as a social responsibility. The money will go to a consolidated fund.
