COVID-19: Assam to be under lockdown from 6 pm on Tuesday till March 31

Amidst the escalating coronavirus scare, the Assam government has ordered complete lockdown in the state from 6 PM tomorrow till March 31.

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision.

Pharmacies, groceries, banks and oil depots will remain open during the lockdown period. All state borders will be sealed, interstate transport including private vehicles will not ply, said Sarma.

Sarma said strict action will be taken against those who violate the lockdown order.

The Health Minister appealed the citizens to check the authenticity of information being spread across social media as the platforms are being flooded with fake news in the wake of outbreak.

Sarma also urged the mainstream media to play a proactive role in curbing the menace of fake news.

Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital to take stock of the preparedness against the disease.

He also attended a meeting at Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital, Barpeta to review measures taken up to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19.
