Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi took oath as Rajya Sabha member on Thursday in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Assam chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also attended the oath-taking ceremony.
However, several members of the Congress, who criticised his Rajya Sabha nomination shouted ‘shame’ and walked out of the House.
Gogoi was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Ram Nath kovind on March 16. A notification announcing his nomination to the upper house was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday night.
Gogoi headed benches that pronounced several key judgements including the sensitive Ayodhya land dispute case and the Rafale fighter jet deal.
