Tension prevails in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district after a clash between Khasi Students Union (KSU) activists and another group left one person reportedly dead.
The incident took place on Friday at Ichamati under Shella constituency where the KSU had held a meeting against the contentious CAA and demanded the Inner Line Permit.
Reportedly, as soon as the meeting ended and people started dispersing, a group of people armed with machetes and rods attacked the KSU activists. The KSU activists are alleging that the other group of assailants comprised of suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
As per reports, many KSU activists from Sohra, Shella and adjoining areas were injured in the violence. The president of the KSU was also attacked, but was unhurt.
The Sordar of Ichamati village and some police personnel were also assaulted by the other group. Many vehicles including buses were also vandalized in the clash.
Reportedly, one person from the KSU has died in the violence, however, the individual is yet to be identified.
Following the incident, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma held an emergency meeting with Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, the DGP and the DC of the East Khasi Hills district.
The state government has instituted an enquiry into the incident and different companies of the Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed in the area.
