Tension erupted at Kangpokpi in Manipur following the death of a Kuki National Organisation (KNO) rebel in police custody.

People in large number barged into the Kangpokpi police station resorting to vandalism. Enraged mob obstructed traffic along National Highway-2, leaving commuters stranded on the road.

Irate locals burnt tyres on the road in front of the police station. The deceased KNO cadre identified as Thangboi is survived by three children and wife.

According to sources, the Thangboi was arrested by personnel of 38 Assam Rifles Kangpokpi post on January 25. He was handed over to Kangpokpi police station.

However, the KNO cadre was allegedly found dead inside the lock up of the police station.
