The Assam government has registered a case against the Shaheen Bagh protest organiser and former JNU student Sharjeel Imam, who earlier made a controversial remark on camera saying that Muslims are in such numbers that they can cut the entire Northeast from the rest of India.

Imam said that their aim is to cut Assam and North East from India. In an apparent reference to the Chicken Neck – the strategic corridor which connects India with the Northeast Imam told the people to join in large numbers and block the railway tracks and roads.

Earlier, Assam health, finance & education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision of the State government to register a case against Sharjeel Imam.

Addressing a press conference, Assam Finance Minister said Sharjeel Imam was allegedly heard saying in an audio clip that the state should be cut off from the rest of India and taught a lesson.

Assam government has taken cognizance of this very seditious statement and we will register a case against this individual, Sarma said.

ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh said that an FIR has been lodged against Imam for his speech and he has been booked under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) as well as several sections of the Indian Penal Code.
