Even as Mizoram soaks in yuletide spirit to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the state government has announced the ‘No vehicle zone’ programme to restrict vehicular movement in Aizawl.
The ‘No vehicle zone’ between Chanmari in Lunglei district and Zodin Square came into effect from Monday and will last until Tuesday. The ‘No vehicle zone’ is an outcome of the meeting of the coordination committee on traffic management, Government of Mizoram.
The main shopping area in between Zodin Square and Chanmari houses important markets and the biggest shops in Aizawl has been made vehicle-free under the initiative.
The distance between Zodin Square and Chanmari area is about 2 km. Under the no-vehicle zone programme, no vehicles except emergency services will be allowed to ply on that stretch starting from 10 am to 4 pm up till tomorrow.
It needs to be mentioned that people from different parts of the state come to Aizawl before Christmas for shopping which leads to overcrowded streets.
In order to accommodate the surge in number of shoppers, the no-vehicle zone initiative will allow festive revelers to walk around safely in the marketplace without vehicles around.
