The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has adopted a resolution to implement the Inner Line Permit system in the state.

The resolution was unanimously adopted at a special session of the assembly that began at 10 am this morning.

According to the resolution, both the ruling and the opposition has come together on same page to urge the Government of India to implement ILP system in the state.

Legislators of the House adopted the resolution seeking the ILP system under the provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act of 1873.

The special assembly session assumes significance since the Centre has already brought the Citizenship Amendment Act drawing flak from various groups and organisations besides the civil society.

On Tuesday, the Meghalaya cabinet had unanimously given its approval for implementation of the ILP in the State. Earlier, the Congress, the Khasi Student’s Union had demanded that the MDA coalition to pass a resolution in the House to implement ILP.
