While the entire region was up in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, Manipur celebrated the Centre’s announcement to extend Inner Line Permit in the state.
Relief and joy spread across Manipur as Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the state would be exempted from the ambit of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 as it would be brought under the ILP system.
The BJP-led state government declares a public holiday on December 10 to celebrate the occasion.
Manipur BJP on Tuesday took out a rally to celebrate the Centre’s move. Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Biren Singh also attended the celebrations and addressed the gathering at a function.
Manipur has been vehemently opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. However, the Centre’s decision to extend ILP to the state has definitely calmed the nerves.
