Today by-elections are underway in four states of the Northeast. Four seats from Assam, one from Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh each and three seats from Sikkim.
Voting is underway in full swing at four Assembly Constituencies of Assam — Jania, Sonari, Ratabari and Rangapara. The polling began at 7 am today at polling booths across the constituencies.
Assam is seeing by-polls in the four seats of Sonari, Rangapara, Ratabari and Jonia.
While Sonari and Rangapara which fall in Sivasagar and Sonitpur districts respectively, are seeing a favourable trend for the BJP in the Brahmaputra valley.
Ratabari in Hailakandi district is the only seat from the Barak valley. The main contest in these three seats are between BJP and Congress.
Jonia constituency in Barpeta is the only constituency where a three pronged contest is being seen between BJP, Congress and AIUDF.
The results for the by-polls are slated to be out on October 24. While people came out in large numbers to cast their votes, candidates too showed up at the polling booths to cast their votes.
