The hard copies consisting names of only the persons whose names were included in the NRC after being excluded from the draft NRC is being made available. The Supreme Court monitored mega citizens list updation exercise includes names of all Indian Citizens and thus help in the identification of illegal immigrants in Assam.
The process of receipt of NRC application forms had started during the end of May in 2015 and ended on August 31 in 2015. A total of 3,30,27,661 members had applied through 68,37,660 applications.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had earlier clarified that non-inclusion of a person’s name in the NRC will not amount to his or her being declared a “foreigner”. The government has made it very clear that people without names in the NRC will not be detained under any circumstances.
An estimated 70 thousand people were involved in the mega exercise that cost the government a whopping 15,000 crore. The process which formally started with publication of the legacy data back in 2015 has finally completed its main objective of publishing the final NRC list.
