Indian shuttler and world number five PV Sindhu became the first ever Indian badminton player to win a gold medal at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships.

The 24 year old defeated world number four Nozomi Okuhara of Japan with a scoreline of 21-7, 21-7 in just 38 minutes.

Sindhu had finished second in the previous two editions of the World Championships. Sindhu was in top form at the final match which took place at St Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Sindhu’s historic victory has brought in jubilation’s for her family back in India who were glued to the television set watching their daughter bring them glory and accolades.

Badminton Asia Council vice-president and Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who was present during the BWF World Championship final match at Basel, personally congratulated the Sindhu on her historic victory.

Sarma, who is also the president of the Badminton Association of India, wasted no time after the match and lauded Sindhu for creating history.

Meanwhile, congratulations started pouring in from all over as Sindhu created history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to Twitter to congratulate the ace Indian shuttler for achieving what no Indian has done in the past.
