The judgement was passed by the special CBI Court under Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar. He heard the arguments of the CBI and Chidambaram’s counsel for over one and half hour.
The CBI had sought five days custody and had said that the former Home minister was not cooperating in the investigation.
The agency said Chidambaram’s custodial interrogation was necessary to unearth larger conspiracy in the INX media case.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that grave offence was committed and custodial interrogation was required to get answers to certain questions for effective probe.
Chidambaram was arrested on Wednesday night by a team of CBI and Enforcement Directorate sleuths from his residence after a day of high drama.
Chidambaram is being investigated regarding finances related to the INX media case. Chidambaram will now be brought back to the CBI court on August 26.
As per the order, family members are allowed to meet Chidambaram for half an hour every day.
Chidambaram has been taken to CBI headquarters from the court where he will be questioned, even confronted with the other accused in the case, including his own son.
The court has also said that the accused’s dignity cannot be violated and the family members should be allowed to meet him.
