The Assam Congress has been hit by a serious crisis. First the drubbing at the hands of BJP three years ago and now a spate of desertions by top leaders obviously triggered by the lack of direction the party is faced with after Rahul Gandhi’s exit as the President.

The first to quit was former Pradesh Congress president Bhubaneswar Kalita. The Congress veteran lost no time in joining BJP.

The second to quit, Gautam Roy, party heavyweight from Barak Valley and a flamboyant cabinet colleague of then chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Roy too is scheduled to join BJP tomorrow.

The third to leave the Congress in Assam was veteran tea community leader and former Rajya Sabha MP, Santiuse Kujur, who had been with the party for close to one and half decade.

These developments have taken place at a time when the Congress at the national level is left leaderless after Rahul Gandhi decided to shirk responsibility after the miserable Lok Sabha election defeat.

Meanwhile, the chaos within the Congress in Assam was further exposed by party Lok Sabha MP from Barpeta, Abdul Khaleque.

Talking to newspersons, the Barpeta MP said there is an internal tussle going on for the Chief Minister’s chair and without taking names, appealed to his party leaders to set aside the craving for becoming the Chief Minister of the state.

The Congress MP urged upon his fellow partymen to work collectively to achieve the target of 64 seats in the 126 member assembly that would enable his party to form the next government in 2021.
