The 18-hour-long state-wide shutdown in Manipur is underway with life being affected partially in the state capital Imphal. While many places in the city wore a deserted look, some movement of vehicles and people are being seen in certain places.

Commercial establishments remained shut in the city, government offices along with government and private hospitals are continuing to operate and flight services are also going on unaffected.

The shutdown began from 6 on Friday morning and will continue till 12 midnight. The bandh has been called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed to protest the mysterious death of a 13-year-old school girl in her hostel room in Manipur.

Raging protests erupted in two different parts in East and West District of Imphal on Thursday noon demanding justice for the 13-year-old minor, who was found dead at her hostel room in Standard Robert Hr Secondary School on 18th of July.

In Imphal East, students from CC Higher Secondary School took to streets and during the protest, 3 students received injuries in police action after shelling tear gas & mock bomb to disperse the protesters.

Similar protests also erupted in Imphal West Sangolband-Tera with students & women’s taking to the streets. All shops and business establishments in Thangmeiband, incldung Thangal Bazar were shut down completely.

Five persons have been arrested in connection with the minor’s death by the SIT, which was constituted on July 25. Meanwhile, the Manipur state government has also decided to hand over the case to CBI, after demands by the JAC.
