In a major blow to the Assam Congress, Rajya Sabha member and former state party President Bhubaneswar Kalita on Monday resigned from the Rajya Sabha.

Kalita had another year to go to complete his term as the Rajya Sabha MP. His term would have ended in April 2020.

Taking to twitter, he wrote, “I have resigned from the Rajya Sabha membership today”.

A five time member of Parliament, Kalita had earlier served as minister of Commerce & Industry and Information Technology between 2002-04.

It may be mentioned that on July 30, Sanjay Singh, another Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, had resigned from the Congress and the Upper House to join BJP.
