Over 400 tourists were evacuated from Lachen in the Sikkim’s North District. The tourists were stranded in the area after incessant rains triggered landslides in the area.
It took close to 48 hours for the local authorities to clear the debris and restore connectivity between the closed stretch of Cheten and Bonsoi to ensure the tourists can be evacuated from the area.
A total of 427 tourists were eventually evacuated as the local district administration used government and Army vehicles besides taxis to ferry the tourists. The Army’s Gorkha Regiment and ITBP also helped in the operation.
