The Assam government on Saturday deported a group of 20 Bangladeshi nationals including a woman from the Karimganj border in Sutarkandi.

Out of the 20 illegal immigrants, 19 were lodged at the Silchar detention camp while one was lodged at the Kokrajhar detention camp.

These Bangladeshi nationals had illegally entered India in 2014 and were arrested from different parts of Karimganj, Hailakandi and Silchar. The 20 were convicted for violation of Passports and Foreigners Act.

The deportation comes at a time when the Assam government is drawing considerable flak for its inability to send back illegal migrants.

Significantly, the Supreme Court recently noted that of the over 1.1 lakh people declared as illegal migrants by tribunals over the past decade only 900 were in the state’s detention camps.

The Supreme Court also expressed concern over the fact that 70,000 people declared as illegal migrants by the Foreigners Detection Tribunals in Assam have disappeared.

The Apex Court was also unhappy over the state government’s suggestion that all declared foreigners living in detention centres could be released if they execute bonds or sureties of Rs 5 lakh each besides biometric details.
