The regional parties of Northeast have resolved to jointly oppose the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in a crucial meet held in Guwahati on Tuesday.

As many as 11 regional parties came together in Guwahati in the crucial meet jointly convened by the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The meeting adopted a 5-point resolution to oppose the contentious bill.

Top leaders of the regional parties which include the UDP and the KHNAM from Meghalaya, NPF and NDPP from Nagaland, MNF from Mizoram and IPFT from Tripura will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind to register their opposition. The regional parties’ meet also resolved to form a committee to oppose the bill.

Briefing media persons after the meet, NPP national president Conrad Sangma ruled out the formation of a regional alliance as yet. He reiterated that the regional parties will fight the bill jointly.

Meanwhile, taking to twitter Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The is fully committed towards the development and prosperity of Assam. We will always protect the interests of the state. Several initiatives of the Central and Assam Government have contributed towards transforming lives of the citizens of Assam.”
