A team of the NESO led by Chief Adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya and president Samuel Jyrwa has been detained by Tripura police while on their way to Khumulung, the headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council near Agartala to visit the victims of Tuesday’s police firing.

The NESO team which was in Agartala to meet the injured was on its way to Khumulung when it was stopped midway by local police.

At least five to six persons were seriously injured when police resorted to blank firing and lathicharge to disperse NESO activists who were trying to enforce the 11-hour bandh called by the organisation across the region.

Speaking to Northeast Live over phone from Khumulung, NESO chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya slammed police action and said the move highlights the plight of tribal people in Tripura.

He also slammed the alleged autocratic government in the state for trying to silence the protests.

Meanwhile, the NESO team had yesterday met some victims of police action in Agartala. The Tripura government has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.
