Assam Police has registered a suo moto case against educationist and intellectual Hiren Gohain along with KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and journalist and activist Manjit Mahanta, slapping sedition charges against them for reportedly making secessionist remarks.

Latasil Police registered a suo moto complaint under sections 120(B), 121, 123 and 124(A) of the IPC against Gohain, Akhil Gogoi and Manjit Mahanta after they were accused of supporting independence for Assam during their respective speeches made during a demonstration against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill earlier in the week.

Guwahati Police commissioner Deepak Kumar said the trio made some comments that need to be looked into.

The passage of the Bill in the Lok Sabha has stoked tension in Assam leading to massive protests. The Asom Gana Parishad, an ally of the BJP, has also pulled out of the coalition earlier this week in protest against the Citizenship Bill.
