Coal mine owners, coal dealers and transporters in East Jaintia Hills held a rally in the district to protest against the failure of the current and previous state governments to lift the ban on coal mining in Meghalaya.
Hundreds of coal dealers and transporters from the area attended the rally. All business activities had been shut down in East Jaintia Hills.
Speakers in the public meeting demanded that the Government should come up with a mining plan and lift the ban on coal mining.
It may be mentioned that rampant illegal mining in the district was exposed after two tragedies hit coal mines in the area.
Meanwhile, on day 27 rescue operations continued at the disaster hit coal mine site in East Jaintia Hills.
While rescue efforts continued at the site by multi agency rescue workers, not much headway has been made in the rescue so far.
While pumping of water continues from the mines below, rescue workers are hopeful that the pumping would be over which would enable them to begin their search below in the shafts.
