The Meghalaya Government has maintained that an independent judicial probe into the brutal attack on social activist and CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing and her colleague Amita Sangma is what the government intends to initiate.

However, the Government is yet to take a decision on handing over the case to CBI as demanded by the family members of Kharshiing.

Informing this, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the matter of handing over the case to the CBI is yet to be discussed and a decision in this regard has not been taken by the State Cabinet yet.

Tynsong said the State Government would soon write to the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya urging him to appoint a retired judge to carryout out an independent probe in the matter.

Speaking on the alleged involvement of the NPP’s West and East Jaintia Hills working president Nidamon Chullet in the attack on the social activists, Tynsong said anybody found involved in the attack will be expelle d from the party.

Notably, Chullet and few others accused of brutally assaulting Agnes Kharsiing and Amita Sangma are still at large.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya High Court has directed the investigating officer to file the latest status of the investigation.
