One of Meghalaya’s most vocal social and RTI activist Agnes Kharshiing was brutally attacked by unidentified assailants in the state’s East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday.

The attack on Civil Society Women’s Organization president Kharshiing comes barely a day after she exposed rampant transportation of coal in the state despite a National Green Tribunal ban on coal mining in Meghalaya.

Kharshiing was attacked at a place called Tuber Shohshrieh, a coal dumping area along the national highway near Lad Rymbai in East Jaintia Hills.

According to sources, Kharshiing who had gone to East Jaintia Hills and even visited the Lad Rymbai police station with a female CSWO member had taken pictures of trucks loading coal and as many as 30 unidentified miscreants waylaid her and brutally attacked her with stones and sticks.

As a result Kharshiing and the other CSWO member Amita Sangma received serious head injuries and were rushed to Ialong civil hospital in critical condition.

Kharshiing had yet again highlighted the alleged failure of the state government in ensuring that the NGT ban on coal mining is implemented properly.

She had also posted photographs of rampant transportation of coal despite the ban. Kharshiing was rushed to Shillong from Ialong as her condition worsened.
