The woes of the Congress seem to be increasing in the poll bound state with reports coming in that veteran Congress leader and Mizoram Assembly Speaker Hiphei is in talks with the BJP.
In fact according to sources, the veteran leader and sitting MLA from Palak constituency has had a series of talks with Assam minister and senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sharma and he even flew down to Guwahati to have discussions with the BJP.
Hiphei, an MLA elect from Palak constituency in Siaha district was nominated by the AICC to contest the polls from his constituency.
However, majority of the members of the Mara Autonomous District Council are backing a newcomer K Riacho, a retired IAS officer, over Hiphei.
In fact six members of the Congress ruled council submitted a memorandum to chief minister and state party president Lal Thanhawla expressing their preference for Riacho over Hiphei.
Congress sources said that Hiphei had also been in touch with Lal Thanhawla but having known that his chances of retaining the candidature is grim, decided to get in talks with the BJP.
