Self-styled General Secretary of Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, Cherishsterfield Thangkhiew has surrendered before Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
Apart from the Deputy CM, Director General of Police RP Agarwal, and other police officers were present at the time of surrender at Police Headquarters.
Thangkhiew joined the insurgent group Hynniewtrep A’chick Liberation Council also known as HALC in August 1987 and held the post of General Secretary. During his time at HALC, he was involved in political mobilization.
A decade later in 1997, when the group was disbanded he joined the HNLC. Cherishsterfield soon after left India for Bangladesh in 2004 and did not return until his surrender today.
The surrender comes as yet another boost to the state government’s counter insurgency efforts.
Insurgency has gone down drastically in Meghalaya following the killing of GNLA chief Sohan D Shira earlier this year.
