Traffic along the sole highway connecting Sikkim to the rest of the country came to a standstill today when a portion of the road was swept away by fresh landslides.
A portion of the National Highway 10 was washed away in the 29th mile area, around 40 kms from the Bengal-Sikkim border at Rongpu, thus cutting off Sikkim from the rest of the country. Work is underway to restore connectivity along the crucial route.
Incessant rains for the last few days has yet again triggered landslides in Sikkim. Besides, there has been a steady rise in the water levels of the Teesta.
