The Manipur University’s Chancellor Professor Dilip Madhukar Nachane has confirmed to Northeast Live that Prof Pandey is on leave and that the Union HRD ministry is in the process of approving this.
Prof Pandey created a flutter on Saturday when he surfaced in Imphal and put out a communique announcing his resumption of duty as the VC.
This enraged the university community comprising the teachers and staff associations who rejected Professor Pandey’s claim saying that he was required to be on leave until the investigation into the allegations against him was over.
The MUTA and MUSA representatives said, was the basis of an agreement reached on August 16 at the chamber of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh where representatives of the HRD ministry were also present.
Professor Pandey while returning to the university’s helm on Saturday said he had gone on a months’ to attend to personal work and was only resuming his duties as he has not received any intimation from any quarter including the Union HRD ministry that he was supposed to be on leave.
The university had in the meantime issued an ultimatum that they would resort to a fresh agitation if the matter was not resolved by Tuesday.
However, the latest circular on Monday issued by the University is supposed to set the controversy at rest because the registrar in charge in his communique had categorically stated that Prof Pandey qpould be on leave until the probe is over and that this decision has the approval of the university’s chancellor Professor Dilip Nachane.
