Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council chief HS Shylla’s remarks in relation with the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage (Amendment) Bill, has sent his party, the NPP looking for cover.

The KHADC chief executive member created a controversy by stating that the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Bill that seeks to prevent Khasi women from marrying non-Khasi men will go a long way in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS among the indigenous community.

Shylla also created another controversy by stating that the bill does not recognize the third gender.

While rights groups have already demanded an unconditional apology from Shylla over the remarks, his party the NPP has distanced itself from the remarks saying that it is his personal statement.

Unperturbed by the widespread flak the lineage bill has drawn in Khasi Hills, Shylla today called on Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council chief M Rymbai to press for a similar bill in Jaintia Hills region.

Earlier, chief minister Conrad Sangma too distanced the party from Shylla’s remarks stating that the government has nothing to do with the remark made by Shylla or any policy brought about by the KHADC.
