The Indian Air Force has successfully evacuated 19 persons stranded in Silei Ayan island in Siang river.

However, 5 people including 4 young boys and an elderly person volunteered to stay back and refused to be evacuated as they insisted that they want to look after their milch cattle.

The evacuation was carried out following the rise in water levels of the Siang river after China released excess water from three dams in Tsangpo river in Tibet.

The Air Force pressed into service its Mi-17 choppers for the rescue operation. The Indian Air Force’s Mohanbari Air Base carried out the rescue operation.

The rescue operation was carried out following a formal request by East Siang Deputy Commissioner Tamiyo Tatak to the Air Force for evacuation stranded persons along with their livestock in Selei Ayan island in Siang River.

High discharge of water by China into Siang, the highest in 50 years is threatening to submerge at least 12 villages flanking river Siang in Arunachal Pradesh. Apprehensions are that this might also adversely affect areas in downstream Assam.

Meanwhile, several Arunachal Pradesh Ministers along with State Chief Secretary Satya Gopal and State DGP Take Ringu are visiting East Siang today.
