DMK supremo M Karunanidhi was finally laid to rest at Chennai’s Marina beach on Wednesday.
Earlier, Kalaigner’s mortal remains draped in the national flag was carried in a glass casket placed atop a convoy which slowly but surely made its way through an endless, unrelenting sea of supporters finally putting him to rest with full state honours alongside his political guru CN Annadurai.
The pall of gloom around Rajaji hall from where the procession began was also accompanied by tears of relief in the eyes of his supporters as the Dravidian icon was eventually accorded the honour of a Marina Beach burial.
However, the covetable 6 feet of space alongside his mentor at the Anna Samadhi did not come on a platter for the family members and supporters of Kalaigner.
In fact, it was something that seemed highly unlikely just a day ago after the state government rejected DMK’s request for the burial, but a loud overnight protest by thousands and a midnight verdict by the Madras High court ensured that the heartfelt desire of every admirer of Dr. M Karunanidhi was eventually fulfilled.
At Marina, top national leaders and family members paid tribue to Karunanidhi .
