The Assam government has ordered a special investigation to probe complaints of sexual abuse on three minor girls at SOS Children’s Village in Guwahati’s Azara.
State Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that acting on the special news report aired by Northeast Live, she has issued a directive to the state chief secretary to initiate the probe into the shocking incident.
Meanwhile in a significant move, the minister also said that going ahead her department has decided to involve only woman officials to look after the affairs of the orphanages that shelter girls.
The assistant director Lun Vaipei was arrested following a complaint filed by Guwahati-based child rights activist Miguel Queah and is right now in police custody. The assistant director, of course, has been booked under section 10 of POCSO Act which stands for punishment for aggravated sexual assault.
Meanwhile, a three-member team of the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights visited the SOS Children’s Village Azara today to follow up on the details of the case.
ACPCR chairperson Sunita Changkakoti informed Northeast Live that the alleged sexual assault of the minors took place back on July 22 but the case came to light much later. The ACPCR chairperson also questioned the alleged delay in conducting the medical tests of the minor girls.
The OC of Azara police station informed that the medical examination of the girls has already been conducted. The Azara PS OC added that assistant director of SOS Children’s Village Lun Vaipei is still in police custody and that the police are yet to file a charge-sheet into the case.
