Another incident of mob lynching has come to fore in the state of Tripura. This time the incident has been reported from the state’s South District where a mob thrashed a person to death.

The incident took place yesterday at the remote Kalachara village under the Subroom subdivision. The victim Sukanta Chakroborty, an employee of the Information and Cultural Affairs department, had gone to the village on behalf of the SDM’s office to dispel rumours of kidneys being removed from the body of a young boy.

Chakroborty and his driver had been travelling in a car using a microphone to announce and sensitise locals against rumours of any sorts. However, sources state that he got into a spat with the locals which led to a mob thrashing him and his driver.

Police soon reached the spot and rescued both the persons and took them to a nearby hostpital where Chakroborty was declared dead, while his driver was admitted in a critical condition.

The mob had fled the scene after assaulting the two men. Police are conducting investigation into the matter though no arrest has been made yet.

Despite the best efforts put in by the government which has even suspended internet services in a bid to control the situation, two cases of mob lynching in a day rocks Tripura.

Earlier, another youth was killed in Mohanpur in Tripura’s West District on suspicion that the youth and two others who had gone to the area were organ traffickers. Two other youths were also critically injured in the incident.
