As the date for publication of final draft of the NRC approaches fast, the United Nations’ High commissioner for Human Rights has sought clarification from the Centre about the fate of individuals whose names will be excluded from the updated NRC on whether they will face detention or deportation.

The United Nations body in an eight-page letter to Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has raised some serious allegations and concerns in regards to the world’s largest exercise to identify legal citizens carried out in Assam.

The letter alleged that as per information received by the United Nations body, local authorities in Assam may manipulate the verification system in an attempt to exclude many genuine Indian Citizens from the updated NRC.

The United Nations body also alleged that Bengali Muslims continues to be  disproportionately affected and targeted by Foreigners Tribunals as many have been asked to prove their citizenship before Tribunals who according to the United Nations Human Rights Agency lack the necessary means to do so.
